“I have an idea that the only thing which makes it possible to regard this world we live in without disgust is the beauty which now and then men create out of the chaos. The pictures they paint, the music they compose, the books they write, and the lives they lead. Of all these the richest in beauty is the beautiful life. That is the perfect work of art.”

The process of drawing is, before all else, the process of putting the visual intelligence into action, the very mechanics of visual thought. Unlike painting and sculpture it is the process by which the artist makes clear to himself, and not to the spectator, what he is doing. It is a soliloquy before it becomes communication.

It is through drawing that masters are first revealed, through drawing that they live and prove their value, whatever variations they may impose on their talent.

Art improves quality of life. All you have to do is think about the difference between a room with bare walls and one with walls full of art.Art inspires people to think about and even visualize how life might one day be better than it is now.

I believe that if you don't like drawing, for whatever reason, there's no reason not to jump straight into painting. Ultimately, it's the creation of art that's important, not the road you take to get there.

My attitude towards drawing is not necessarily about drawing. It's about making the best kind of image I can make, it's about talking as clearly as I can.

Drawing is the artist's most direct and spontaneous expression, a species of writing: it reveals, better than does painting, his true personality.

A painter told me that nobody could draw a tree without in some sort becoming a tree; or draw a child by studying the outlines of its form merely... but by watching for a time his motions and plays, the painter enters into his nature and can then draw him at every attitude.
